A Marriage Proposal on Haleakala

My older sister is getting married!

My sister, Malissa, and her fiance, Jose, are currently here on vacation. Toni and I have been spending our free time with them since they got here and we are having a blast! Although we are still working at our day jobs, it feels like we are vacationing with them. Malissa and Jose came with their friends, Pearl and Arnel, who both played a large part in helping Jose customize an engagement ring and plan out the proposal. Everyday so far has been packed with activities and adventures around Maui, including an overindulgence in Maui’s delicious local foods – but I will write more about that in another post.

On the day of the proposal, we spent the afternoon at the SWAP meet and spontaneously attended the Made in Maui Festival before heading up to Haleakala to watch the sunset. At around 3:00 pm, we drove up the mountain and enjoyed the panoramic views of Central Maui before driving into the clouds. When we finally made our way at the top of Haleakala, we parked at the newer observatory to watch the sunset. The crew was surprised how cold it was at as they stepped outside of the cars. The chilly winds made the temperature feel so much colder; however, coming from Alaska they could handle it. We walked around the area and checked out the observatory building before watching the sun gradually disappear into the sea of clouds. The moment the sun had set, Jose went down on one knee and pulled out a silver box from his pocket. Malissa was in shock and immediately became overwhelmed and emotional at the sight of the box and beautiful ring. She couldn’t verbally respond to his question of “Will you marry me?” – but instead, nodded her head in agreement. Jose trembled slightly during this pivotal moment of his life. I couldn’t help but feel overwhelmed with joy and happiness – I started tearing up. (I was not aware that Jose had planned to propose to Malissa during their trip here – so it came to me as a pleasant surprise too).

We ended the evening at Sansei Seafood Restaurant and Sushi Bar to celebrate this momentous occasion with more friends. It was a night filled with love, joy, happiness, delicious sushi, sake shots, and incredibly talented karaoke singers. I am so happy that I will finally have a brother, and hopefully a niece or nephew in the near future! I can’t wait for what the future brings for these two and overjoyed that they are starting a new and exciting chapter in their lives. Congratulations Jose and Malissa!

A special shout out to Arnel for the GoPro shots!
