Yesterday we searched for a waterfall near a large banyan tree down the Lower Makamakaole Stream – unfortunately, we had no clue where we were going and ended up exploring other parts of the stream. It was not until we arrived home did we figure out how to get to the the banyan tree and waterfall.
The next day we were eager to find the waterfall and came back to the trail for our second attempt. This time we headed downstream pass the pool with the rope swing. Not knowing where or if there was a clear path downstream we decided to climb down the edge of the stream to be sure we were headed in the right direction. This was not the ideal path to our destination as we spider crawled our way down the wet and slippery rocks.
Eventually, we saw a path from the stream and followed it! As we got closer, we could hear the waterfall. Not too long after finding the trail, we saw the banyan tree! Seeing the tree from a distance brought a rush of excitement; we were here!
We arrived at the bottom of the banyan tree ladder safely. Being afraid of heights, it was a little scary being at the top – but the climb down was pretty easy.
We explored past the first waterfall and found ourselves at the top of an even larger second waterfall! We saw a rope tied to a tree at the edge of the waterfall cliff. We do not have any experience with rock climbing or have the intuition to know what was safe or not – so we did not attempt to climb down since the cliff was more vertical and taller. Instead, we stayed at the first waterfall and swam in the pool.
After hanging out for awhile, we climbed back up the banyan tree. We had a great time finding and swimming at this place. On our way back, we found a path through the tall grass that ended up at the pool with the rope swing! This saved us from having to climb up the stream which was really nice. Until next time!
